ABOUT US
Hidden in the Klein Karoo off Route 62, J&J’s Doornrivier is a beautiful self-catering wildlife reserve and mountain biking heaven. If you are looking for a unique and quiet getaway off the beaten track, then this is the place. Our camps are made up of a central boma building with a kitchen and outdoor fireplace, have 4 or 5 safari-style tents with their own shower and bathroom under the stars and a swimming pool to cool off on those hot afternoons.
ROUTE 62
Our Route 62 is modelled on the world famous Route 66 in the USA which is renowned as an iconic highway that was first built in 1925 and links places like the Grand Canyon and Amarillo and runs through the states of California, New Mexico and Texas.
Our very own Route 62 starts from Ashton in the Winelands and runs through to Oudtshoorn on a road, less travelled that is sprinkled with interesting sounding names like Calitzdorp, Amalienstein, Zoar, Baviaanskloof and Barrydale. With a bit of poetic license, it runs from Cape Town to Queberha and is famous for the meandering route through the Klein Karoo which is much loved by bikers and discerning travellers.
The R62 takes you through the folded mountains of Montagu into the Klein Karoo which is flanked by the Swartberg and Langeberg Mountain ranges. In winter, the highest peaks are often snow capped and in summer, the same peaks shimmer in the heat.
There are caves, art galleries, historic towns and ostrich farms to explore. The area also boasts wine, brandy and port producers that are renowned worldwide and a number of restaurants in Barrydale and other towns that will make your mouth water.
OUR RESERVE
Our 10 000 hectare private reserve offers visitors the privilege of exploring the unique succulent karoo. We offer our guests the exclusive use of one of our three wilderness camps. Here you have the freedom to wander through this space at your own discretion, to cycle the single tracks or head out for your own game drive with sundowners and to return to a fire with friends under the magnificent canopy of stars.
Our home becomes your home for your stay and what we are offering is a completely self-guided and self-catered experience without the intrusion of other people or staff.

Vollies Camp
Vollies Camp was named after a tame Ostrich that helped us during construction. It nestles in a protected valley 4 kms from the Shack and comprises 5 safari-style tents, each with a unique outdoor bathroom. A glass enclosed Boma provides a very social living, dining and kitchen space whilst the pool has a spectacular view of the Swartberg mountains.
Witteberg Lodge
Witteberg Lodge is our flagship camp. The glass enclosed Boma provides 360 degree views and overlooks the Doornrivier river. This Boma was designed to host combined parties from The Shack and Witteberg. It has 4 luxury safari-style tents – with own bathrooms under roof and a fully equipped kitchen and living area. Spoil yourself at this beautiful location.
